How To Get Around While Traveling

A crucial area of information to research is how to get to each destination and how to get around once you’re there. Transportation options can vary dramatically from place to place, and what’s simple in one region may be complicated or unavailable in another.

Take time to review maps and look into local transportation networks for every location on your itinerary. Depending on where you’re traveling, you may need to consider trains, buses, ferries, rideshares, taxis, or rental cars. In some areas, walking or cycling might be ideal; in others, arranging a driver or transfers in advance is the best option.

Understanding the available routes and connections ahead of time is essential for a smooth, efficient, and stress-free trip.

What to Think About

Route Planning

Maps

You might think that maps are a thing of the past now that we have GPS on our devices wherever we go. But, no! Maps, whether paper or virtual, are crucial for planning and useful when walking. Have local maps for all your destinations with you -- either printed or downloaded on to your phone to use when cell or wifi coverage is unavailable.

Trains and Buses

Trains and buses are likely to be an excellent option when traveling between towns and cities especially where there is high speed rail or a lack of airports. Check out the options for any plan that has multiple destinations and make sure to book tickets ahead for scenic rides.

By taxi

Cars, Taxis, and Rideshares

Cars are the best way to get around a city or for local excursions - the question is who should do the driving? As you plan, look into the options for taxis, ride share apps such as Uber, Lyft, and Bolt, hiring a driver (who can also show you around, and renting in each location. And remember to check out tipping expectations for taxis.

Planes

If you are going far away, chances are that you will fly there. Make sure to check what airlines fly to your destination and if there is a choice of airports. Remember to look into smaller airports and discount airlines especially for in-country or intra-region trips.

Bosphorus Ferry

Ferries and Boats

While cruising is a fabulous option for many trips (see Types of Travel/Cruises), ferries and boats can provide a relaxing and scenic option for traveling between islands and for certain destinations. If you like being on the water, remember to look at options for sightseeing cruises.

And the Rest

From campers to helicopters, there are many other ways to get from one place to another. The  usual considerations are time, cost,  convenience, and personal preference. When you know where you are going, do a little searching to find the options for the location.
