Adventure travel usually includes more physical activity than other types of travel. It can also take you to places with fewer of the comforts of home. Therefore, there are some things to consider that are specific to this kind of trip. If you are considering an "active" vacation or going on an adventure trip, think about these questions before you start planning:
1. Trip Goals & Experience
What’s my primary motivation? (e.g. thrill/adrenaline, cultural immersion, nature appreciation, personal challenge)
What type of environment appeals most? (mountains, jungle, desert, ocean, arctic, etc.)
What balance of activity vs. downtime do I want? (nonstop action vs. rest days)
2. Personal Comfort & Fitness
What’s my current fitness level and technical skill? (hiking experience, swimming ability, climbing skills)
Am I prepared for altitude, heat, cold or humidity?
Do I have any health conditions or dietary needs to plan around?
3. Logistics, Duration & Timing
What’s the best season for my chosen destination and activity because adventure destinations can be heavily affected by weather (Mt. Everest!)?
Do I need special permits, visas, or entry fees?
How reliable are local transport and guides?
What infrastructure exists for emergencies or evacuation?
4. Gear & Packing
What specialized equipment do I need to bring versus rent locally?
Is my gear tested and in good condition?
What’s my packing list for safety items (first-aid, communication device, emergency shelter)?
5. Safety & Insurance
What are the main risks (wildlife, altitude sickness, swift water, extreme weather)?
Do I need a guide or can I go self-guided?
What level of travel or adventure insurance covers my planned activities?
6. Cultural & Environmental Impact
How can I respect local cultures and customs?
What steps will I take to minimize my environmental footprint?
Are there community-based or conservation-focused operators I can support?
7. Group Dynamics & Support in an Intense Situation
Am I traveling solo, with friends, or joining a group tour?
What skill- or personality mix do I need in my companions?
How will decisions be made and conflicts resolved on the trip?
