I’ve been fortunate to travel to South Africa a few times—though not very recently—and it remains one of the most memorable destinations I’ve ever experienced. It’s a country that truly has it all: powerful history, breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and some of the best food and wine in the world.
History That Resonates
Any visit to South Africa should include time spent in Soweto. Walking through this community is a moving reminder of the country’s struggle against apartheid and the courage of those who fought for freedom. Sites connected to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu highlight both the pain of the past and the extraordinary resilience and heroism of the South African people.
Another profoundly moving experience is visiting Robben Island, just a short ferry ride from Cape Town—weather permitting. Standing inside the prison where Nelson Mandela and so many others spent years of their lives fighting for freedom is sobering and unforgettable.
Cape Town & Its Icons
Cape Town itself is a destination that never fails to impress. The city is framed by dramatic mountains and endless ocean views. Many visitors make the climb—or, more my style, take the cable car—up Table Mountain, and the sweeping panorama from the top is impressive.
It is also the access point for the Stellenbosch wine country and for a coastal drive to see the African penguins at Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town. Many people enjoy the stop at the coast to seethe dramatic oceanscape at Cape Point and some of the charming towns along the way. Between the vibrant waterfront, cultural neighborhoods, and easy access to nature, Cape Town truly offers something for everyone.
Safari Adventures
Of course, no trip would be complete without going on safari. The thrill of seeing the “Big Game”—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo—in their natural habitat is unforgettable. Kruger National Park is a classic choice, with its vast landscapes and incredible biodiversity. For a more intimate experience, many of the smaller private game reserves offer equally spectacular wildlife viewing with fewer vehicles around. The lodges range from rustic to ultra-luxurious, so it’s worth doing some extra research to ensure your accommodations match the level of comfort and style you’re looking for.
And if you have the chance to extend your trip, a visit to Victoria Falls, on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, is absolutely worth it. The sheer scale and power of the falls is breathtaking—an unforgettable natural wonder that pairs beautifully with a safari adventure. Depending on the time of year and how much water is flowing, it can be an opportunity to walk through a landscape of rainbows.
World-Class Food & Wine
South Africa is also a paradise for food lovers. From Cape Town’s fine dining scene to charming country restaurants, the gourmet offerings are a delight. The wine country around Stellenbosch and Franschhoek is among the most beautiful anywhere, with rolling vineyards, dramatic mountain backdrops, and cellar doors serving exceptional vintages. Pair that with long, relaxed lunches, and you have the perfect recipe for indulgence.
Hidden Artistic Gems
One of the lesser-known highlights I’d recommend is a visit to the Dylan Lewis Studio and Sculpture Garden. Lewis is internationally renowned for his powerful wildlife and human-inspired sculptures, and seeing them in the setting of his studio and gardens is extraordinary. Be sure to reserve in advance—it’s an experience not to miss.
Craft and Creativity
South Africa’s artistry also shines through its craft markets. Browsing the stalls, you’ll find remarkable beadwork, handwoven textiles, and unique jewelry. I still treasure some of the intricate bead necklaces I brought back, each piece reflecting both tradition and modern creativity.
Final Thoughts
South Africa offers an unmatched variety of experiences. It’s a place where you can stand in spaces that changed the course of history, be awed by untamed wildlife, savor world-class wines, and return home with art and craft that carry a piece of the country’s soul. Though it’s been
