Highlights From A Journey Through New Zealand

My New Zealand adventure began in Auckland, on New Zealand's North Island, where a perfect first dinner at Ahi set the tone for the entire journey. From there, I traveled to Hobbiton, a magical stop that looks just the way it should for Tolkien fans, miniaturists, and the child in all of us. A ferry ride across to the South Island opened the door to even more spectacular landscapes—each one more striking than the last.
Among the South Island highlights was a series of wine tastings (think Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Riesling), a visit to Oamaru where I stayed at the historic Pen-y-Bryn Lodge, and an introduction to the quirky world of steampunk culture. (Pen-y-Bryn is also a great base from which to explore the Moeraki Boulders and see New Zealand Penguins -- there are three varieties!) A scenic flight over the glaciers of the Southern Alps (home to Mount Cook -- the highest peak in New Zealand at over 12,000 feet!) offered an unforgettable aerial perspective of ice and mountains. I'd recommend a cruise through the fjords of Doubtful Sound (where I saw double rainbow arching over an island; a sight I won't soon forget), but know that the more popular and easy to access Milford Sound affords cruises with wonderful views as well and is considered the country's "most spectacular wonder." Many people go on boat rides to see glow worms in caves on Lake Te Anu, but I was able to see them on an evening walk through the Hokitika glow worm dell, which was truly mystical.
New Zealand is often described as being “about nature,” but that barely scratches the surface. The diversity of landscapes—from rolling green hills to dramatic fjords—is simply glorious. While adrenaline-packed adventures are everywhere, I leaned into culture, scenery, and cuisine, which ranged from good to exceptional.
A big thank-you to Once Upon a Trip, discovered through Zicasso, for expert planning. One tip: apply for your visa at least a week before departure—we learned that the hard way! Doing so and curating a voyage to New Zealand that meets your desires will yield a fantastic and memorable journey, I'm sure!
